We are living in an era where the latest technologies are used and defense systems are developed
every day. In this changing world order, the defense industries of the countries have become a sign of
their independence. Because if you do not have a national defense industry, you are not independent.

Turkey has been significantly changing and moving forward in recent years by making huge
investments in the defense industry. The Turkish defense industry has set a new mission in the early
2000s and identified the concept of nationality as the main target. With the thorough studies of the
Undersecretary of Defense Industry, the share of domestic product has increased rapidly and today
it has reached 60%. It is the motivation of the whole defense industry to pull this goal to higher level.
We are competing with developed countries as technological competence in many fields. Today, we
are proud of our products and companies that have become world brands in land vehicles. But for full
independence, we must be doing the sub-systems completely. In order to localize these subsystems,
this should be supported by state policies.

Research and development studies in the defense industry are on long term basis and expensive. You
design a product, develop it in theory, and then complete the prototype. However, it is a more difficult
process after that. You need to test the prototype in the field to test, verify, certify. For this reason,
budgets given to Defense Industry should be increased. In addition, the private sector always works
based on efficiency, is much more dynamic.
